Addressing ecological problems is one of the pressing matters of modern society. That is why, “Ecology and sustainable use of natural resources" topic is among the national priorities of the Russian Federation. There is a growing need in ecologists, caused by the deterioration of the ecological situation on Earth, the urge to stop the catastrophic consequences of irrational human activities and preserve our nature for the healthy live of our future generations.

New nuclear power facilities, factories and enterprises are built every year in Russia. The pollution from this new infrastructure is relatively high, that's why the environmental scientific research and designing of energy efficient technologies and energy alternatives become highly important.

There is nowadays a vast demand on specialists, capable of conducting the environmental situation monitoring, develop new human-ecology cooperation technologies, and expertize industrial facilities and technological concepts.

Experts say that the existing demand on environmental engineers will only grow in years.

Bachelors in “Ecology and environmental management” study biology, geography, soil science, ecological monitoring, environmental protection systems, technogenic systems and environmental risk, environment management economy etc. Future engineers acquire experience on actual industrial facilities, but also at administrative, educational and research institutions.

Master degree

After obtaining their Bachelor degree, students can continue their studies with the “Ecology and environmental management” Master degree program.

Participation in real projects

TUSUR University allows students to take part in Project Based Group Learning (PBGL). Students at "Ecology and environmental management" participate in following development works:

Effect of light on greenhouse plants research. Students work on finding the optimal light regime for plant growing under artificial lightning. The results may be useful for agriculture development.

Experimental research on population ecotoxicology and identification of basic regularities based on its results. This project is focused on the determination of toxic influence caused by hydrocarbon mix and dispersed systems produced on fitopopulations and zooplankton; creation of propitious and identification of the most suitable conditions of phytocenosis exploitation (project “Winter Garden for TUSUR”); health characteristics investigation for children and youth population doing tourism and alpinism. The results may be applied to formulate standards of the allowable discharge level; to estimate the toxicity level of chemicals, dispersed into the atmosphere; to find the comfortable and suitable conditions for phytocenosis; in term of education – to develop a set of means in the field of eco-culture and healthy lifestyle for children and youth population.

Study of recreation areas of urban ecosystems and its use for the environmental education. Here, together with one of the Tomsk region schools "Samus Lyceum", students develop educational methods, as well as diagnostic systems to make the population's behavior more environmentally-oriented, but also test their findings on a group of students in secondary and higher educational institutions. The applicability of the project is high due to the fact that the environmental education is one of the main areas of environmental policy in Tomsk region. Over the last years, the special attention has been given to this issue.
